about the remedies

All remedies are made from plants that have grown in Bloomington, Indiana and surrounding areas, with the majority coming from my gardens. I strive to create medicines from native plants and species, but will sometimes use other plants based on availability and herbal actions. Tinctures are measured and made with the best plant material to alcohol ratio - meaning that the desired constituents are extracted and their strength is consistent.

why focus on natives?

Much of the knowledge of the indigenous caretakers of these lands has been erased. European plants dominate not only the herbal knowledge we currently have, but are often also invasive - dominating the very lands. When we learn about and use plant medicine, we find ourselves wanting to grow it. I want to offer remedies from and knowledge of native plants so that we all feel more inclined to grow and use them.

about Me

I am Michelle Boshears, an avid learner, plant-lover, and crow whisperer. (Okay, that last one is really just a dream, not yet realized). I have been studying plant medicine since 2011, when I began my journey at the California School of Herbal Studies. Since that program, I have deeply researched many plants on my own. I have been a Registered Nurse since 2014, and also weave this knowledge in my creations and consultations. I spend most of my time with my lovely family and the plants and creatures in my gardens.

why the name Foremother Gardens?

Women throughout history have practiced and preserved spiritual, earthly medicine. Their knowledge and wisdom have not only been passed down through words and experience, but also through the womb and through collective memory held in the genes of ancestors and of plants. Medicine of our female ancestors represents a deeper understanding of the passing of time, birth, death, interconnectedness and love. Foremother Gardens shares and practices in the spirit of feminine healing ancestors, with the energy of compassion and empathy, listening and hearing, contemplation and inspiration.
